Do you ever feel guilty for letting yourself truly rest or just be?
If you grew up getting praise only when you were achieving or being productive, you might have picked up the belief that your value depends on how much you do. This keeps us stuck in “survival mode” constantly busy, always doing and our nervous system won’t let us rest, hence we feel guilty when we do.
When we’re always switched on like this, our nervous system gets stuck in fight or flight. That means higher cortisol, more inflammation, and eventually, our bodies start to send us warning signs. If we don’t listen to these signs, we can end up pushing ourselves straight into burnout. There could also be a protector part that will not allow our body to listen. Because deep down we believe if we stop something bad will happen if we do.
It’s so important to teach our nervous system that it’s safe to rest, and that we can be productive from a calm, regulated place. If we don’t, we risk dropping into that shutdown mode where exhaustion and even immune issues show up.
